Sceáwian is an Australian investigation and intelligence practice. We assist organisations with commercial and workplace questions, and individuals and families with private matters. The people we serve and the records we review may differ; the discipline is the same: define the issue, use appropriate lawful methods, test the information and distinguish observation from inference.

An investigation is useful when it helps someone make a better informed decision. We aim to give clients a clear account of what was checked, what was found, what remains uncertain and what further work, if any, could resolve the gap.

We identify the decision the enquiry must support, then plan relevant records, interviews or site work. Reporting should connect each material conclusion to its sources and identify competing explanations.

Private investigations

For personal matters that call for discreet fact-finding. The private practice covers relationship concerns, lawful observation, tracing, background and identity checks, public online enquiries, and documentation of harassment or threats.

We first assess the legitimate purpose, safety and privacy issues, and whether the proposed method can answer the question. A report separates confirmed facts from possible matches, unverified leads and observation gaps.

What happens before a finding is made?

The scope and collection plan should match the actual question, not a generic investigation template.

Frame the question

We discuss what needs to be established, who will use the result, relevant dates and what information is already held. We also identify conflicts and matters outside the proposed scope.

Plan the enquiry

The agreed scope sets out the records, people or locations that may be relevant; the methods available; practical limits; and when the client should be updated or asked to approve a change.

Test the material

We record sources, preserve original material where appropriate, compare independent accounts and check plausible alternative explanations. A missing record or uncertain identity is reported as a limit, not filled with assumption.

Explain the result

Findings should distinguish direct observation, information supplied by others and analysis. The client receives an account of the evidence, contradictions and unresolved points relevant to the decision.

The name

Why Sceáwian?

Sceáwian is an Old English verb associated with looking at, examining and considering. That meaning suits the work: before a conclusion, look carefully at what can be checked. The name is a statement of approach, not a claim that every uncertainty can be removed.

Pronunciation: SHAY-wee-an. This is how we say the Sceáwian name today; the precise sounds of Old English varied by place and period.
