Support may be useful where witnesses need to be located, a disputed site needs documenting or public digital material may disappear. An early preservation plan helps avoid a later scramble to explain where a document or image came from.
Agree instructions and permitted contact before approaching witnesses. Preserve originals, record handling and create labelled working copies. Statements should distinguish direct recollection from information learned from others. Images and maps need dates, source references and an explanation of any annotation or reconstruction.
Provide the issues to be investigated, court or procedural deadlines, known witnesses and the format counsel requires. Discuss confidentiality and privilege with the legal adviser; neither arises automatically from commissioning an investigator.
